ONE OF THE GREAT NAMES OF ANTARCTIC EXPLORATION WITH THIS DETAILED SHACKLETON COLORING PAGE.

This Ernest Shackleton coloring page celebrates the famous polar explorer whose expeditions to Antarctica produced one of the greatest survival stories in exploration history.

The drawing shows Shackleton dressed in heavy cold-weather clothing, surrounded by Antarctic ice with an expedition ship rising behind him.

Sir Ernest Shackleton became famous during the period now known as the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. Although his expeditions did not always achieve their original goals, his determination and leadership helped make him one of the best-known explorers of the early 20th century.

This detailed coloring page offers plenty to work with, from Shackleton's fur-lined polar clothing and heavy boots to the ice, snow and wooden sailing ship in the background.

Who Was Ernest Shackleton?

Ernest Shackleton was born in Ireland in 1874 and went to sea while still a teenager. His career eventually took him far beyond normal shipping routes and into the dangerous waters surrounding Antarctica.

His first experience of Antarctic exploration came as part of Robert Falcon Scott's Discovery expedition, which left Britain in 1901.

Shackleton later led expeditions of his own. During the Nimrod Expedition of 1907-09, he and his companions travelled farther south than anyone had previously managed, reaching within around 100 miles of the South Pole before turning back.

It was a difficult decision, but Shackleton understood that continuing could leave the party without enough supplies for the return trip.

His decision to put survival ahead of reaching the Pole would become an important part of his reputation as a leader.

Shackleton and the Endurance Expedition
The expedition most closely associated with Shackleton began in 1914.

His plan was hugely ambitious. Shackleton wanted to make the first land crossing of Antarctica, travelling across the continent from one side to the other via the South Pole.

The expedition ship was appropriately named Endurance.

Unfortunately, the expedition encountered serious problems before Shackleton and his men could even begin the crossing.

Endurance became trapped in the pack ice of the Weddell Sea in January 1915. The crew remained with the ship for months, hoping the ice would eventually release it.

Instead, pressure from the moving ice began crushing the wooden hull.

By October, Shackleton ordered his men to abandon ship. Endurance finally sank beneath the ice in November 1915.

One of Exploration's Great Survival Stories
Losing Endurance could easily have resulted in disaster for the entire expedition.

Shackleton and his crew were stranded on drifting sea ice, hundreds of miles from normal shipping routes. They had limited supplies and no simple way to contact the outside world.

When the ice eventually began breaking apart, the men took to three small lifeboats and reached the remote Elephant Island.

But they were still far from safety.

Shackleton then selected a small group of men for an extraordinary open-boat voyage aboard the James Caird. They travelled roughly 800 miles across some of the most dangerous seas in the world to reach South Georgia.

After reaching the island, Shackleton and two companions still had to cross its mountainous interior to reach the whaling station at Stromness.

Against remarkable odds, they made it.

Shackleton Returned for His Men

Reaching help did not mean Shackleton considered his job finished.

The men left behind on Elephant Island still needed rescuing.

Several attempts to reach them were defeated by difficult sea ice, but Shackleton refused to give up. Eventually, on August 30, 1916, he returned to Elephant Island and rescued the remaining members of the party.

Every member of the Endurance group survived.

That achievement is a major reason Shackleton's story continues to be told. The expedition had failed to cross Antarctica, yet his efforts to bring his men home turned the failed expedition into an extraordinary story of survival and leadership.

An Ernest Shackleton Drawing to Color

This Ernest Shackleton drawing places the explorer in the frozen landscape that defined so much of his career.

Shackleton is shown wearing thick polar clothing designed to protect against extreme cold. The large coat, gloves, boots and fur trim provide plenty of areas for different shades of brown, cream, gray or white.

Behind him stands a traditional expedition ship surrounded by broken ice. The masts, rigging, hull and other details make the ship one of the most interesting parts of the coloring page.

Different blues, whites and pale grays can be used across the Antarctic landscape, while the wooden ship provides an opportunity to add warmer brown shades.

The Discovery of Endurance

The story of Endurance gained a remarkable new chapter more than a century after the ship sank.

In March 2022, an expedition located the wreck on the bottom of the Weddell Sea at a depth of just over 3,000 metres.

Despite spending more than a century beneath the water, the ship was remarkably well preserved. Images of the wreck even showed the name ENDURANCE still clearly visible across the stern.

The find brought worldwide attention back to Shackleton and the extraordinary expedition of 1914-16.
