The Owl and the Pussycat

This delightful The Owl and the Pussycat coloring page brings Edward Lear’s famous literary nonsense poem to life in a charming moonlit scene.

Floating gently across the sea in a beautifully decorated boat, the owl strums a guitar while the pussy-cat sits beside him beneath the stars. The detailed drawing captures the playful and dreamlike spirit that has made the poem loved by generations of readers.

First published in 1871, The Owl and the Pussy-Cat is one of Edward Lear’s best-known poems. It tells the whimsical story of two unlikely companions who sail away together “in a beautiful pea-green boat.” The poem is filled with imagination, music, and gentle humour, and this colouring page reflects that magical atmosphere perfectly.

The scene is set at night beneath a huge crescent moon surrounded by stars and swirling clouds. Calm waves move beneath the little boat while a lantern hangs from the mast, casting a warm glow across the water. The detailed linework makes this drawing relaxing and enjoyable to colour for both children and adults.

A Beautiful Drawing Inspired by Edward Lear’s Poem

At the centre of this coloring page are the owl and the pussy-cat themselves. The owl sits proudly with a guitar resting in its wings, just as described in Edward Lear’s poem. Its large eyes and detailed feathers give it plenty of texture and character. The guitar strings and wooden body also provide smaller areas for careful colouring.

Beside the owl sits the smiling pussycat, dressed in a simple outfit that gives the scene a storybook feel. The cat appears calm and happy as the pair drift across the sea together beneath the moonlight.

The boat itself is richly decorated with swirling carved patterns along its sides. These details make the drawing feel almost magical, like something from an old fairy tale illustration. The sail rises high above the characters while a lantern hangs from the mast, adding another beautiful feature to colour.

Above the boat, the night sky is filled with stars, clouds, and flowing curved lines that create a sense of movement in the air. The large crescent moon becomes one of the most eye-catching parts of the entire drawing. You could colour the moon in pale yellow or silver shades, while deep blues and purples could help create a rich nighttime sky.
